The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the result of 7,192 private candidates, representing 8.89 percent of the total number of candidates that sat for their West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
The candidates who sat for the examinations between October 27 and December 20, 2023, were allegedly said to have committed certain infractions.
This was disclosed by the examination body in a statement signed by the Acting Head of its Public Affairs Department, Moyosore Adesina.
WAEC said, “The cases are being investigated and the report of the investigation will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council for consideration. Thereafter, the committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates.”
The statement disclosed that a total of 85,600 candidates registered for the examination but 80,904 sat for the examination in 568 centres across the country.
However, a total of 78, 419 candidates representing 96.93 percent of results were fully processed and released while 2, 485 candidates, representing 3.07 percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors traceable them.
WAEC stated that the analysis of the performance further showed that 46, 267 candidates, representing 57.19 percent obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics, while 35,830 candidates representing 44.29 percent obtained credit and above in minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
It said efforts were being made to speedily complete the processing to enable all the affected candidates to get their results fully processed and released soon.
According to WAEC, of the figures that sat for the examination, a total of 39,790, amounting to 49.18 percent were males, while 41,114 representing 50.82 percent were females.
Advising the candidates on how to check their results on its website, WAEC urged candidates to confirm their status before visiting the digital certificate platform to access the digital copies of their certificates released along with their results.
