The Afrobeats singer and Grammy Award winner, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burnaboy has been accused by veteran Fuji musician, Remi Aluko, of lifting chorus patterns from Fuji Music. Aluko stated this when he had a chat with Echo Room, saying Afrobeats had learned a lot from Fuji, particularly chorus rhythms.
He said, “Afrobeats are stealing a lot from Fuji. They know that. They stole a lot of things from Fuji music. Burnaboy for instance, his stage performance is unique because it’s inspired by Fuji.”
He spoke about originality and creativity in the Fuji music scene, saying Burnaboy’s onstage performance was influenced by Fuji.
Burnaboy rose to stardom in 2012 when he released Like to Party, clinching the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2021 with his song Twice as Tall.
In 2017, he signed with Atlantic Records in the United States where he released his third studio album, Outside.
A singer, songwriter, and record producer, Burnaboy, has the credit for popularised Afrobeats and Afrofusion in the international scene.
