Chef Damilola Adeparusi
Doggedness, sheer determination and assistance from well meaning Nigerians may have led Damilola Adeparusi, known as Chef Dammy, a student of Federal University of Oye Ekiti, to surpass Chef Hilda Baci’s 100-hour cook-a-thon record.
Chef Dammy announced through her Twitter page in the early hours of Tuesday that she had cooked for 120 hours, meaning she has beaten Chef Baci’s record of 100 hours.
Baci had beaten India chef, Lafa Tondon’s record of 87 hours 45 minutes and 100 seconds to emerge as the new world record holder.
Baci’s victory was announced recently by Guinness World Records as the new record holder for the longest cooking by an individual.
However, the moment she set out to beat Baci’s record, Dami was faced with stiff opposition following criticisms and condemnation by some social media bloggers and celebrities who are close to the former.
But in the face of this opposition, the student chef insisted on her dream undeterred, even as she was not supplied with medical personnel to attend to unforeseen circumstances, and absence of security agencies to safeguard the environment, except for a few bouncers.
But, having seen her as their own, members of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Adesina, rallied round her by visiting her at her very small kitchen in an apartment located in a community in Oye Ekiti Local Government Area.
During the solidarity visitation, the Vice Chancellor made a donation of N200,000 to her, which according to Wole Balogun, Special Assistant on Media to the Vice Chancellor, was to encourage her in areas of logistics.
Besides, the Ekiti State Government, through the First Lady, Mrs Oyebamiji, sent words of encouragement to the chef to press on until she reaches for the gold.
The leadership of Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ), Ekiti State Chapter, led by Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela, also stormed her kitchen to encourage her to victory, as other distinguished Nigerians threw their weight behind her as motivation.
Surprisingly, Baci, the present record holder, also donated towards Dammy’s course as an endorsement and encouragement.
