At the recent virtual annual general meeting, Mr. Daven Dass, a former Director of the Wits Law Clinic, was elected the President of the South African University Law Clinics Association (SAULCA).
He brings extensive experience, having served as Vice-President of SAULCA and as a member of the executive since 2009.
Founded in 1982, SAULCA serves as the national umbrella organization for University Law Clinics in South Africa, focusing on advancing excellence in clinical legal education and enhancing access to justice.
Expressing gratitude for the election, Dass stated, “I am deeply honoured and humbled to assume this role.” He acknowledged the significant challenges facing law clinics nationwide and outlined his vision to strengthen their role.
This includes preparing final-year law students with the necessary skills to enter the legal profession with a strong sense of social justice.
He also emphasized the importance of providing quality legal assistance to the most vulnerable members of the community through clinical legal programs.
Looking ahead, Mr. Dass aims to facilitate collaborations with key stakeholders such as the South African Law Deans Association and the Legal Practice Council.
Additionally, he serves as the African representative on the steering committee of the Global Alliance for Justice Education, contributing to the development and expansion of clinical programs in Zimbabwe.
