Over 90 Nigerian students being sponsored by Zamfara State Government in Cyprus, Turkey are facing expulsion over non-payment of school fees.
In a statement by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Turkish Zone quoted by Sahara reporter, the situation has become serious that the institution in North Cyprus has warned that the ill-fated students may be sent home if they fail to offset their bills, offering them just a little time with which to pay up the outstanding.
Following this, students’ leader, NANS Turkish Zone, Comrade Opeoluwa Seun Ojekemi, appealed to Zamfara State Government to honour its commitment and urgently make available the necessary funds to settle the outstanding fees.
The students body warned further that, “Time is of essence, hence we are giving a 7-day ultimatum to attend to this pressing matter. Delay in this will exacerbate the situation, robbing the nation of its potential leaders, researchers, and innovators.”
“The Zamfara State Governor must take immediate action to safeguard the future of these students and protect the nation’s investment in their education, as this is part of his promises to the good people of Zamfara State.”
“We call on the media, and civil societies and concerned citizens to stand in solidarity with these students and raise their voices to exert pressure on the government to act swiftly,” it also stated.
According to the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Avusolu, Of over 61,000 African students in Turkey as at 2022, Nigerian students formed the majority. The figure, mainly driven by scholarship provided by the Turkish government, rose from about 40,000.
