The University of Ibadan (UI) and the Government of Oyo State have called for a campaign against cultism, which has gained prominence across all levels of education in the country.
Disclosing this was the Chairperson of the Anti-Cultism Campaign Committee at UI, Professor Helen A. Labeodan, who in her speech “The Evil of Cultism & Anti-social Conduct.”
Labeodan advised the 300-level clinical students of the University at the 2024 General Orientation/White Coat Ceremony for students who had completed their Pre-clinical studies at the main campus never to engage in cult activities.
Speaking further she noted that many people get involved in cultism when they search for protection they couldn’t find anywhere else; hence becoming vulnerable.
Professor Labeodan admonished the students that they should exercise caution and moderation in their extracurricular activities and relationships so that they could be guided and avoid being threatened to join cult groups.
She advised students who might have been initiated into cult groups to renounce their membership as soon as possible to avoid legal consequences.
The don directed such students to the University’s Students Affairs Division and Centre for Social Orientation to seek counseling and assistance.
In the words of Mr Akinjide Ajagbe, who represented the Chief Security Officer of the University, conflict arising from cultism can negatively impact the environment and harm families and individuals, especially when the law of karma comes into play.
