The University of Lagos, Akoka, has alerted its students, staff, and other stakeholders of the outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria. According to the statement issued by the Medical Centre University of Lagos, signed by the Director, University of Lagos Medical Services, the symptoms of the disease are fever, headache, soar throat, muscle aches, and general symptoms.
It informed that patients may experience bleeding, organ failure, and in some instances, death in severe cases.
Lassa fever is primarily transmitted through contact with urine or feces of infected rats.
It could as well be transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
To take precautions, the University directed all students and staff to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer if soap is unavailable.
It advised members to store food in rodent-proof containers, maintain cleanliness in eating areas, and minimize contact with rodents and their excretions.
Members of the University community were also advised to use protective equipment such as gloves and masks when caring for the sick.
It disclosed that educational materials would be distributed across campus, directing all to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms, or have been in contact with a confirmed case.
“Enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures will be implemented in common areas” added UNILAG Medical Services.
