The Vice Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Professor Timothy Adebayo, has urged schools and students to focus more on the production of food. He expressed this opinion during a lecture he delivered recently at Obafemi Awolowo University in commemoration of the 12th annual faculty week of the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife.
In the lecture entitled, “Back to the Roots,” he decried the over dependency of Nigeria on other nations for food supply.
He added, “Central to this crisis is the near collapse of the agrarian sector in Nigeria. Once major exporter of agricultural commodities to the world, Nigeria like other major Africans, have become unable to produce enough food to feed itself.
Professor Adebayo, however berated the insurgence ravaging the North that it has had adverse effect on food supplies to the southern part and Chad Republic which also relies on Nigeria for food survival.
He said the role of faculties of Agriculture in the universities lies in training and reproducing the critical mass of rural activists to work for the entrenchment of the double paradigm of business and development in the villages.
He made a special case for rural sociology in the curriculum, a case that will retool the rural sociology component in the curriculum so that every agricultural scientist and student of agriculture should develop interest more or less in the rural sociological implications of their research.
