Winner has emerged in The 2023 University of Johannesburg’s prestigious Prize for Translation.
The winner is Henrietta Rose-Innes. She won the 2023 UJ Prize for her outstanding translation of “Die biblioteek aan die einde van die wêreld” from its original Afrikaans to English.
Henrietta’s exemplary work in bridging cultural gaps and linguistic via translation earned her the prestigious prize.
Die biblioteek aan die einde van die wêreld” was originally written in Afrikaans before she translated the book to “A Library to Flee” in English.
The panel of judges for the 2023 UJ Prize for Translation consisted of Prof Ilse Feinauer – Stellenbosch University (SU); Prof Thys Human – North-West University (NWU) and Mr Marius Swart (SU). These distinguished erudite are experts in the field.
This prestigious award is given to the translation of any text into English from its original source in any South African language in consideration of its rich cultural diversity and linguistics.
The UJ Prize for Translation serves as a testament to the outstanding achievements of translators within the realm of literary translation. The 2023 edition of this competition witnessed a remarkable number of entries, each demonstrating exceptional quality.
