The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) are the two examination bodies responsible for assessing students’ academic achievement at the end of their secondary school education.

They prepare students for higher education, including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education (NCE), and others.
WAEC
WAEC, established by law, is the foremost examining council in English-speaking West African countries.
It conducts the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school students and the Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec General Certificate Examination (GCE) or WAEC GCE for external candidates.
WAEC is recognized and widely accepted globally by universities in the USA, Europe, Canada, Asia, and other African countries, with a reputation for high standards.
WAEC certificates are often required for job applications, especially in West Africa.
NECO
NECO, established in 1999, aims to address the need for a national examination body in Nigeria.
It conducts SSCE for internal students and GCE for private students, as well as the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
NECO provides an alternative examination option for students who may have failed WAEC or want to improve their grades.
It offers multiple examination schedules, giving students more flexibility, while its exams are generally less expensive than WAEC exams.
More Advantages from WAEC, NECO
While NECO has gained credibility and is accepted in Nigeria and some countries, WAEC is still the preferred choice for students planning to study abroad.
However, sitting for both exams can provide a competitive advantage for students seeking admission in Nigeria.
Both offer more benefits such as increased career opportunities, improved university admission prospects, enhancement of academic credibility, and greater flexibility in their educational and career paths.
