The Nigerian Afrobeat Grammy-award-winning musician, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, aka BurnaBoy, has made history by being the first African artiste to be nominated in the Artiste of the Year category of the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
In this category, Burna Boy will lock horns with superstars like Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, 21 Savage, Drake, and Cardi B among others.
Burna Boy on the whole earned seven other nominations, coming behind Drake who earned nine nominations, as Cardi B and 21 Savage had the most nominations 12 each.
Burna Boy was also nominated for Song of the Year for the song, ‘Sitting’ On Top Of The World.’
However, no Nigerian rapper could earn a nomination in the Best International Flow category created in 2019, but musicians from Ghana, Zambia and South Africa earned nominations as Black Sherif, Sampa The Great, K O and AKA were nominated in this category.
The 2023 BET HIP-HOP Awards comes up on Tuesday, Oct. 3 in Atlanta.
