An education expert, Evangelist Apata Henry Adebanji, has identified that some forces are behind the moribund educational development in Nigeria. Apata expressed this opinion during an exclusive interview with BlackCampus Magazine on the premises of Bambi Schools, situated at Ejigbo, Lagos State.
Apata, the Proprietor of BANBI Schools, Ejigbo, and one-time Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Oshodi / Isolo Chapter noted that Nigeria’s educational policymakers are not getting things right.
“Despite many educational policies that we’ve copied and adopted, none has worked in Nigeria to the extent that one wonders whether those at the helms of affairs passed through schools or not,” he said.
He expressed, “I think there are forces that are not making things work. These forces are hindering them from doing their best. Imagine a minister of education thanking his principal for bringing him to head an office he does not know anything about. When he got into the position he started scouting for people that will assist him. That’s why I said there are forces somewhere.”
Apata, having passed through all strata of education, identified that it was wrong to have closed teachers’ colleges, or made irrelevant and non-functional when that is the platform where teachers are made. “That is where people like us were made.”
“It is also wrong for a government or minister to sit down and remove History from the scheme. At a time, they were also contemplating removing CRK. So you find out that there is something wrong with our policy on education, and that those who drafted the policy don’t know anything about education. Those charged with education in Nigeria are oftentimes square pegs in round holes.”
He decried a system where education is not given the desired attention unlike what obtains abroad where people have access to quality education, advising that the government should have a philosophy that will drive the educational policies for the future of the children and nation.
