Herbert Wigwe, foremost corporate banker in Africa is building a $500 million elite university in his oil-rich Rivers State, Nigeria. Wigwe told Bloomberg this week that the University offers undergraduate courses in management, science and engineering, information technology, and creative arts.
Named after its founder, Wigwe University will leverage the burgeoning technology in the country, to achieve the same quality of education as is offered in advanced countries like the UK and the US, which will ultimately reduce the craving for education outside the country.
With 1,400 students expected to be enrolled next year, the institution is leveraging technology such as holograms and artificial intelligence to ensure a hybrid system form of education for students.
The school is poised to offer the same quality of education as universities in the US and UK where 30% of the teaching staff will be sourced.
“Wigwe University is expected to take off in September 2024, in Isiokpo, Rivers State Nigeria, with its power generating plants to ensure uninterrupted power supply’’.
Approval for the take-off of the University was given by the Nigeria University Commission in June, bringing the total number of universities in Nigeria to 238, of which 147 are private.
Like most elite Universities in the country, Wigwe University will not come cheap.
