The 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held recently at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos recorded both its high and low moments as winners emerged in different categories of the awards while others, expected to cart home trophies, couldn’t during the event.
The event, resplendent in glitz and glamour, which kicked off with a Cultural Day celebration, had Kehinde Bankole emerged as The Best Lead Actress during the awards.
Her success came following her lead role in the movie entitled Adire, while Wale Ojo won The Best Lead Actor (Breath of Life).
Bankole edged out Funke Akindele (A Tribe Called Judah), Segilola Ogidan (Over the Bridge), Lucie Debay (Omen), Omowumi Dada (Asiri Ade), Ireti Doyle (The Origin: Madam Koi Koi), Adaobi L. Dibor (Blood Vessel).
Other winners are Tunde Babalola, who won the Best Writing in Movie award (Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti); Best Indigenous Language Film ( West Africa) Femi Adebayo (Jagun Jagun); and Best Supporting Actress Genoveva Umeh (Breath of Life).
The Best Supporting Actor was claimed by Demola Adedoyin (Breath of Life), Itura won The Best Script Series, while Breath of Life clinched the Best Movie Award at the final.
Meanwhile, the veteran actress, Idowu Philips aka Mama Rainbow, won the AMVCA Industry Merit Award.
The Award is an honorary recognition for its lifetime contribution to the development of African cinema presented by Multichoice through African Magic.
However, against all expectations, The Tribe Called Judah, a movie by Funke Akindele, which received five nominations, was unable to win any award.
The Tribe Called Judah got both local and international recognitions, making history as the first Nigerian movie to gross 1 billion Naira in domestic theatres.
In any case, The Tribe Called Jude showed it’s a force to reckon with, having secured five different nominations, even as the Breath of Life stole the show, attaining prominence during the awards.
