The 21st Convocation Ceremony for Higher Degrees at Igbinedion University Okada, Nigeria’s leading private university, recently took place with the conferment of honorary degrees upon notable individuals. Among the honorees were Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff, and Justice Joe Itsebaga Acha, retired Chief Judge of Edo State.
Distinguished personalities, including Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, graced the occasion. Senator Akume delivered an insightful convocation lecture titled “Public and Private Sector Intervention in Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Stimulus for Innovative Research and Development.” He underscored the pivo
tal role of tertiary education in fostering economic growth and societal development, addressing challenges such as effectiveness and funding through collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors.
The Founder and Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Sir Chief Doctor Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, officially opened the convocation ceremony. He commended the 2023 graduates for their comprehensive training, positioning them for global competitiveness.
Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, the Vice Chancellor, highlighted the university’s achievements and outlined plans for expansion into other educational regions to strengthen its internationalization strategy.
Professor Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council emphasized the university’s role in producing skilled professionals for Nigeria and serving as a global benchmark for knowledge dissemination and innovation.
Honorary degree recipients expressed gratitude for the recognition, and a notable moment was the presentation of the status of Queen Idia to the guest lecturer, Senator George Akume, by the Deputy Chancellor, Chief Dr. Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion.
Prominent figures in attendance included the Emir of Biu, Alhaji Mai Mustapha Umar, AIG Arungwa Nwazue Udo, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 headquarters in Benin City, Engineer Elvis Obaseki, and the Managing Director of Independent Television and Radio, among other dignitaries.
