As a result of the harsh economy, the number of Nigerian students seeking to further their education in UK Universities has dropped tremendously. This is contained in a report by Gatekeepers News which indicates that besides the turbulent economy, draconian reforms from the UK Government aimed at restricting foreigners from entering the country, have also been a contributing factor.
The situation has also affected Indian students who have been deterred by visa restrictions. Particularly, the development has forced applications from Nigerian students to drop to a significant 71% as a result of which some of the universities are devising various means to cope with the situation, according to reports.
To save money, some universities have had to consider cutting costs, downsizing, and scrapping of some courses.
Also to remain afloat some of them have increased their fees for international students because they could not get more fees from local students.
Commenting, one British analyst decried making Britain less inviting to investment, expressing that every negative headline and policy reform that makes the country less attractive to International students damages the higher education sector.
Earlier, the UK had introduced some reforms aimed at ensuring visas are used for education, not immigration.
