The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, has called for continuous curriculum reforms in all Nigerian universities. This was contained in his message during the collaborative workshop with the British Council on Enhancing Curriculum and Pedagogical Approaches in Nigerian Universities.
Maiyaki said reforming the curriculum would enable universities to adapt to the fast-changing world, disclosing that the number of enrollment in the 149 universities in the country is still as low as 10 percent of over two million admission spaces available each year.
Speaking, the British Council Nigerian Director, Chikodi Onyemerela, thought that Nigeria should rejuvenate its method of teaching in all its universities.
Meanwhile, in its proactive approach to reviewing the curriculum after Benchmarks Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) fell out of favour in 2022, NUC has adopted and implemented the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) at present.
CCMAS is designed for the education and training of undergraduate students wishing to obtain first degrees in different areas of Administration and Management Science in Nigerian Universities.
It has 17 disciplines as against the 12 disciplines that BMAS contained. These disciplines are Administration and Management, Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences , Computing, Communication, and Media studies.
The role of the NUC is to coordinate and review minimum standards/benchmarks for academic programmes, and to develop policies and programmes towards ensuring the orderly development and quality of university education in Nigeria as well as enhancing its relevance to national development and global competitiveness.
