The University of Ibadan is set to tackle challenges caused by obesity and calling for necessary changes in lifestyles. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba when commemorating the World Obesity Day 2024 disclosed measures the University would take against the ailment.
He said UI would adopt obesity as an institutional issue, putting up the right policy framework aimed at the sustainance of a healthy university community.
He recalled the recent move that the University had adopted through the University Health Service (UHS) to regulate food vendors on campus to ensure healthy feeding.
He said any food vendor on the campus that does not display a certificate of fitness from the UHS is operating illegally and should be reported.
During the occassion the Campus Obesity Network was launched as a high-level mandate to coordinate collective action on the prevention and control of obesity and associated chronic or non-communicable disease risks in the University of Ibadan.
Meanwhile, speaking earlier during the occasion, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, had expressed ways to prevent obesity.
Ajetunmobi encouraged all to adopt healthy living, recommending the acronym ‘WASHED’ to sensitize the public on obesity.
Explaining the acronym, she said W stands for Weight Reduction; A for alcohol Reduction; S for Smoking Cessation/Salt Reduction; H for Health Promotion; E for Exercise; and D for Diet Control.
