The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), Professor Kabiru Bala, has said that knowledge transfer to younger ones is part of mentorship, adding leadership that is devoid of successorship is a failure. The Vice Chancellor expressed this opinion during the refresher training organized recently for scientists at the Institute for Agricultural Research, ABU entitled, “Towards Effective Research and Development in IAR.”
Speaking through the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Danladi A. Umen, the VC added that it is appropriate for senior academic to mentor the younger ones through knowledge transfer at a training session of the magnitude of the one being held.
To corroborate the VC’s view on mentorship, the Executive Director, Institute for Agricultural Research, Professor M.I Faguji, disclosed that the theme of the training was agreed upon to address the lapses in mentorship and boost the morale of younger scientists, especially in the area of research.
Meanwhile, Professor Faguji is of the opinion that the ways academic activities are being conducted are unsatisfactory and falling.
He further advised that the level of academic delivery must be improved upon if younger academic are to reap any meaningful fruit from the wealth of experience of older ones.
