Following the removal of petroleum subsidy which has heated up the polity, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other major stakeholders in labour will meet on Friday June 2 to decide on what next line of action to take. This was disclosed this morning at a media chat by the President of Trade Union Congress (TUC), as well as Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Festus Usifo, who added that the announcement of subsidy removal was an ambush on Labour which the government ought to have consulted before the decision was finalised.
However, Usifo explained that labour was not asking government not to remove subsidy, but that it should make the refineries work in order to boost local production which would create employment and reduce cost.
He disclosed that as of now massive rehabilitation is ongoing at Port Harcourt Refinery, while a measure of repair is also being executed at Warri Refinery, but that nothing seems to be happening at Kaduna Refinery.
He commented that the conditioner cash transfer as palliative being planned by government might not work because it would be difficult to determine who poor Nigerians are without adequate data.
The immediate past government of President Mohammadu Buhari had promised that transport allowance would be paid to Nigerians after the removal of petroleum subsidy for six to 12 months.
