The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, has announced a phased rollout of a cutting-edge multipurpose smart ID card for both staff and students. The implementation will be carried out in stages, starting with the initial batch.
Scheduled for release in mid-January 2024, the inaugural batch comprises key stakeholders such as members of the university management, university Senate, deputy registrars, and newly enrolled 100-level students.
This decision comes on the heels of a successful trial of the Smart ID Card on December 28, 2023, signalling a transition from the current monofunctional ID cards utilized by the university community.
To familiarize the University Community with this technological advancement, the Vice-Chancellor and the university management team conducted a demonstration. One of the card’s features was its application as an Attendance Management System for large student classes. This live demonstration took place just before the Senate meeting on Thursday.
To facilitate the demonstration, an Attendance Management Device had been installed at the Senate’s Secretariat. The Vice-Chancellor, along with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Folusho Omobitan, and the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel FANU, utilized the device to log attendance.
The Senate members commended the Vice-Chancellor for bringing the Smart Card vision to fruition, expressing appreciation for the ICT team’s development efforts.
To use the multipurpose card, individuals will need to tap the ID card on the designated device, which will then display the cardholder’s name and relevant information while simultaneously recording attendance.
According to the Director of ICT, Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, who spoke during the card’s unveiling at the Senate Chamber, the new ID card will serve the dual purpose of identification and attendance management for large classes.
Moreover, the card can function as an ATM card linked to a bank account and powered by Interswitch. Prof. Enikuomehin urged staff and students to provide their National Identity Number (NIN) to facilitate the activation of the card and its subsequent distribution.
