The Academic Staff Union of Universities is gearing up for another showdown with the Federal Government, as it expressed its frustration over the lies allegedly told by the government.
In a release by the Union, signed by its President, Professor Emmanuel Oshodeke, ASUU claimed that the government had ignored many of its demands.
The foremost academic union stated that it would meet in February 2024 to decide on their demands that were ignored, as it showed its readiness to explore every option.
The Union expressed its frustration that nothing had been done yet, and that there had been no official communication with the body.
It disclosed, “The EAA, withheld salary, wage awards, 25 percent and 35 percent salary increment announced and backdated to January 2023 were not paid…”
It explained that the government was only able to pay two months out of six months N35,000 palliative promised by the government.
The Union lamented that the government had kept mum about Earned Academic Allowance and the like, but acknowledged that the government had removed the Union from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
The IPPIS is a government initiative aimed at streamlining payroll for government agencies, ministries, and departments, which was extended to universities and polytechnics but was opposed by the workers because of its irregularities.
“Everything has been at a standstill. Nothing is happening, we are consulting nationally and we are holding our NEC meeting soon, we will decide our next line of action at the NEC meeting.” the Union stated.
The last time ASUU went on strike was on February 14, 2022, ending the 8-month-old strike on October 17, 2022, after the now Chief of Staff to the President, who was then the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, brokered peace between the two feuding bodies.
