The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, approved the removal of public universities and other tertiary institutions in the country from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information Systems, (IPPIS), thus allowing the schools to deal with the salary issues of their staff internally.
This information was disclosed to journalists at a briefing in the State House by the Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman Tahir after the council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
Recall that when the IPPIS was introduced by the government of Nigeria for adoption by all public tertiary institutions in 2020, this did not go down well with various unions of the schools as they refused to comply with the directive.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities later developed its payment platform, tagged University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), which the government resisted. This face-off resulted in an indefinite strike that lasted seven months, leading to the cancellation of academic sessions by some institutions. It took the intervention of prominent Nigerians before the then-striking unions could suspend the strike.
With this directive, all universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and mono-technics, are exempted immediately from the use of the Integrated Personnel Payment System (IPPIS) for the payment of their staff salaries and allowances.
