The Spokesperson of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Dr Fabian Benjamin, has disclosed that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is not a pass-fail examination.
Dr Benjamin said this during a media chat while explaining that the exam was just a selection exercise.
The Spokesperson said just because a reasonable number of candidates scored less than 200 marks did not indicate that they failed because it “depends on what you want to do with the exercise.”
“Our examination just as I have said earlier is a selection exercise. You can only say a candidate has failed if, in the final analysis, the purpose for such an examination is not achieved,” he said.
Dr Benjamin expressed that if people began to analyze the Board’s examination without understanding the basic principle for which the exam was conducted, the public might be misled.
“There is nothing wrong with analyzing the performance of any exercise but the first issue that one will have to bear in mind is understanding the purpose for which such exercise is undertaken,” said Benjamin.
He added that a candidate with a high mark such as 300 or above might not be admitted depending on where they wanted to go, while candidates who scored less than 200 would end up succeeding and being admitted.
He stated that being admitted to an institution would depend on the university to be attended, the level of subscription to the programme being aspired for, and the tertiary institution, whether it’s a Polytechnic or a college of education.
