In a recent address to the incoming class of Spring 2024, Professor DeWayne Frazier, President of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), took the opportunity to acquaint new students with the distinctive features of AUN and encouraged them to actively participate in the university’s ongoing narrative of development.
Speaking at the e-Library auditorium to the new students and their parents, Professor Frazier highlighted the transformative journey that led to the establishment of AUN. He recounted the founder’s encounter with the US Peace Corps, which reshaped his outlook on education and catalyzed the AUN experiment.
Emphasizing AUN’s educational ethos rooted in liberal arts, critical thinking, and community service, Professor Frazier urged students to embrace the institution’s unique approach and to aspire to lofty ambitions in line with the founder’s vision.
Expounding on the myriad opportunities available at AUN, Professor Frazier underscored the institution’s commitment to preparing students for future careers that may not yet exist. “We are grooming you to be the innovators of tomorrow,” he remarked, highlighting AUN’s distinction in fostering a culture of entrepreneurship among its graduates.
Welcoming the freshmen, Talford Ongolo, President of the Student Government Association, hailed AUN as a beacon of educational excellence for Africa. He reassured incoming students of a supportive learning environment, where faculty prioritize individual growth and development.
Ongolo acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead but expressed confidence in students’ capacity to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger.
Echoing Ongolo’s sentiments, Byron Bullock, Vice President of Campus Life and Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized the importance of communication between students and their families. He encouraged students to maintain open dialogue with their parents, recognizing their role as partners in the academic journey.
Traditionally, first-year students at AUN spend their initial days on campus familiarizing themselves with fellow peers, exploring various opportunities, and engaging in social activities. Through this immersive experience, they not only forge connections, but also learn to navigate the support systems available to them as they commence their academic pursuits at AUN.
