The American University of Nigeria (AUN), along with the University of Northern Iowa in the United States and Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola (MAUTHY), have collaborated to conduct a comprehensive study on type II diabetes mellitus in select local government areas of Adamawa State.
In recent history, AUN’s President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, paid a courteous visit to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, recently to explore potential partnerships between AUN and MAUTHY.
To fulfill President Frazier’s commitment, recently, a research team led by Dr. Jimmy Reyes from the University of Northern Iowa held an extensive preliminary session regarding the research process at the AUN President’s Conference Room. This team comprises Dr. Reyes, Dr. Jennifer Tyndal from AUN’s Public Health program, Dr. Solomon S. Dansanda from AUN’s School of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences, and Dr. Roland Stephen, a Primary Care Physician at MAUTHY.
Dr. Jimmy Reyes, who had been collaborating with Prof. Tyndal and AUN School of Arts and Sciences researchers, shared that while the research is ongoing in Shelleng, Mubi, Jada, Yola-South, and two other local government areas within the State, a separate team of researchers in the USA will be studying the same subject in Marshalltown, Ames, and Des Moines, all within the state of Iowa.
This collaboration aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information to enhance the project’s effectiveness, ultimately identifying and testing culturally sensitive interventions for diabetes self-management in both countries.
The research plan is structured into three phases. The first phase, the Community Engagement Phase, will run from October 2023 to December 2024, during which surveys will be conducted in various local government areas in May 2024. The Qualitative Phase will follow later in the project.
Dr. Jimmy also committed to providing equipment such as iPads and laptops to streamline data collection and processing. Additionally, it was stated that all research equipment used will be donated to AUN upon the successful conclusion of the study.
