The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Federal University Oye Ekiti has alerted the students about the restrictions placed on commercial bike riders by the Oye Ekiti community. According to a release signed by the SUG President, Mr Ebo Timilehin, the new directive would take effect from 10:00 pm when no bike rider would be allowed in the area.
The release stated that the policy was adopted to ensure that every student is secured, in a bid to curtail burglary and cases of theft in the community.
Earlier, the SUG President explained that the decision of the community to quickly place a ban on commercial bike riders was to nip the rising cases of theft which had become a common occurrence in the bud, as students’ hostels were being burgled during the holiday period.
The President explained that he and his team had approached the traditional ruler of the community to find a lasting solution to the theft and burglary, which in his words, would be met with stiff resistance from students unless something drastic is done to prevent the recurrence.
He added that the SUG was planning in its way to regulate the ban which would be communicated to the traditional ruler.
According to him, the SUG is considering getting the motorcycle riders registered and uniformed, who would be the only bike riders allowed to work at night.
He expressed that the phone numbers of the uniformed and registered commercial motorcyclists would be circulated among the students for easy contact in case of emergency, and if the situation demands that they would be needed at night.
