The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Abuja, has decried the extortion of students by some study centres across the country.
This was contained in an internal memo issued by the institution and signed by the Deputy Registrar, Muyiwa Harrison, on behalf of the Registrar.
NOUN said it had received a series of complaints from students of the University bordering on the increase in ancillary charges at the study centres.
It equally noted that some of these charges added more than 100 percent of what was the original charges.
The University disclosed that the management of the institution had noted further that some of these charges have semblance-bearing on extortion, as reported in some study centres.
It expressed that some of these charges include but are not limited to services rendered from the business centres, examination, and graduation charges.
However, the management of the institution, in light of the worrying trend, had directed all the directors of the study centres to exercise caution in charging students for ancillary services offered by them which should not be more than 10 percent of the prevailing rate, considering economic challenges.
