The Plateau State Government has donated state-of-the-art dental chairs worth nearly 50 million Naira to the University of Jos, Nigeria. The chairs, presented to the Faculty of Dental Sciences at the College of Health Sciences, Lamingo Campus, aim to help the university’s dentistry program secure full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang handed over the thirteen new dental chairs and accessories to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Permanent Site in Lamingo.
He emphasized the importance of training dental professionals to meet the healthcare needs of Plateau State, despite the university and hospital being federal institutions.
Governor Mutfwang expressed his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare services to Plateau residents and commended UNIJOS staff for their efforts in making the donation possible.
He highlighted the state government’s collaboration with federal agencies to benefit Plateau residents and announced plans to establish three dental facilities in the state’s three senatorial districts.
In response, Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, thanked Governor Mutfwang for the donation, stating that it would ensure the timely graduation of current dental students.
He assured that the equipment would be well-utilized and maintained to benefit current and future generations of dental surgeons.
Dr. Pokop Bupwatda, Chief Medical Director of JUTH, described the donation as timely and stated that it would enhance the university’s dentistry program, making it one of the most sought-after in Nigeria.
He noted that the facilities would not only benefit students but also patients from Plateau and neighboring states seeking dental care at the hospital.
Professor Caleb Mpyet, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that it had addressed a significant challenge facing the college.
With the new dental chairs in place, the dentistry program can now fulfill its mandate and provide medical services without hindrance.
The donation of dental chairs is a major step towards meeting the requirements for running a dentistry program, as approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
With this intervention, the University of Jos now has a total of 19 dental chairs equipped with controllers, instrument trays, headlamps, lights, intra-cameras, and other accessories at the Faculty of Dental Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Lamingo Campus.
The event concluded with a tour of the dental wards to showcase the new facilities and a demonstration of how the equipment will be used.
