Two new universities have secured the provisional licence of the National Universities Commission (NUC) following their approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
The new universities comprise Lighthouse University, Evbuobanosa, Edo State, and African School of Economics, FCT, Abuja.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, commended the painstaking effort of the proprietors to secure the approval by meeting the set criteria from among several other applicants.
The Minister advised the newly established universities to ensure the use of high standards in their operations by adopting the best practices to achieve excellence in their programmes.
Professor Tahir advised them to maintain a conducive environment, as well as that upon commencement of academic activities, funding should be sustained towards improving infrastructure, and equipment for teaching and learning.
He also charged them that funding should be sustained to improve human resources up to a level that would earn the university accreditation by NUC and other professional bodies.
He pointed out that approval to establish universities would only be granted to only the promoters who fulfilled the prescribed criteria.
Expressing further, he stated that substantive licence would be issued to well-managed institutions among them after the probationary period of three years.
