In its aim to become sports hub in Nigeria, plan is underway by the University of Jos to establish sports institute as it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Sports University in South Korea.
This was made known in a press release signed by Senior Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, Abdullahi Abdullahi as the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya inaugurated the University’s Sports Committee headed by Professor Ishaya Pam in his office at the Administrative Building, Naraguta Campus.
The efforts will see the institution develop a comprehensive sports programme through the Sports Institute that will harness the talent that abounds across the country in various fields of sports.
Earlier, Professor Tanko Ishaya had promised that the University would play host to the best ever Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in the country when the competition comes up in 2024.
As part of realising this dream, he appealed to the committee to put all hands on deck to ensure that the promise he made with specific aims and objectives in mind to prioritize the development of the University’s sports programmes and facilities.
While speaking, Professor Pam observed that establishing a sports institute that had the capacity to recruit and train students to excel in the various sports event and related disciplines will be a wise investment that will generate huge revenue for the University despite financial challenges facing universities in the country.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the institution is collaborating with a wide range of public-spirited organisations and institutions that will facilitate the introduction of a comprehensive sports curriculum in the institution.
Regarding collaboration, Professor Pam called for the strengthening of the collaboration between the University and Plateau State Sports Council to improve some technical and administrative aspects of the University’s sports programmes for intensive preparation towards the 2024 NUGA Games.
The Vice Chancellor, during the occasion, approved the immediate recruitment of Coach Ben Duamlong to join the Technical Crew of the University on contract basis.
