The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare 11, has called on the President-Tinubu-led Federal Government to consider the robust funding of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The monarch made this appeal when he was installed as the Chancellor of the University by the Federal Government during the 13th Convocation and Investiture ceremony of the institution held recently.
He also advised the government to be cautious in establishing universities with dual roles in ensuring that standards are upheld.
The traditional ruler promised to perform his responsibilities diligently, appealing to the government to include NOUN graduates in the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme by amending the act that established the institution.
He lauded the management of the University on how committed they are to the service, which, according to the revered monarch, had inspired the institution to turn out a total number of 22, 175 graduates who bagged various degrees and merit awards during the convocation ceremony.
The Oba of Benin was also conferred with Honoris Causa, Doctor in Public Administration of the University, as disclosed by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguabaro in a statement made available to the media.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was also represented during the occasion by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu, who urged the traditional ruler to improve the fortune of the University towards achieving the core mandate of the 42-year-old institution.
