The fatal attack by a lion on Monday afternoon at the University of Ife has led to the closure of the zoological garden pending a proper assessment of the situation.
Contrary to news earlier circulated in the media, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi was killed while trying to rescue a female zoo attendant who entered the cattery to feed the lion, “but due to human error”, the lion came for her, and as Mr. Olawuyi ran to rescue her from the snatch, the lion left the lady, turned round to attack him.
Olabode Olawuyi was responsible for the zoo at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and had been caring for the lions since they were born on the campus around nine years ago, a university spokesperson said.
Colleagues who went to his aid were unable to save him before they rushed to the security, who eventually euthanised the beast.
